Final stage of surprise military inspection held in several southern Russian regions

MOSCOW. Aug 30 (Interfax-AVN) - Tactical and tactical-special live-fire exercises and training practices in countering a mock enemy's subversive reconnaissance groups are taking place at 14 combined-arms training sites across the Southern Military District (SMD).

"The concluding stage of the surprise inspection of troops (forces), which began at the behest of the Russian Armed Forces supreme commander-in-chief on August 25 of this year, will be held in the SMD on August 30-31 of this year," the Russian Defense Ministry's department of information and mass communications said in a statement obtained by Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.

At the Kapustin Yar site (Astrakhan region), anti-aircraft missile teams will repel a mock enemy's massive missile airstrike by firing at missile targets, the ministry said.

"Naval infantry units will load amphibious forces onto large landing ships and conduct tactical drills in amphibious landing on an unimproved shore," the ministry said.

Groupings of mixed strike forces from the Black Sea Fleet and Caspian Flotilla will act out a number of episodes in the Black and Caspian Seas, during which they will practice tasks such as attacking a mock enemy's naval group, countering an attempt to lift the siege of the Kerch Strait and a gas condensate field, and freeing a border patrol ship captured by terrorists, the ministry's department said.

"Mobilization and boot camp exercises with reservists aim to practice interoperability between sections, platoons and territorial defense companies.

"A number of defense suppliers will be tested for preparedness to complete the mobilization tasks of supplying and repairing weapons and military equipment over a specific period," according to the statement.

The surprise combat readiness inspection, which was announced at the behest of the supreme commander-in-chief last Thursday, saw troops across the Southern Military District and parts of the Western and Central ones, the Northern Fleet, the Aerospace Force and Airborne Troops put on high alert.
