Decision on measures to boost CIS effectiveness is expected to be made at Bishkek summit - Kremlin

MOSCOW. Sept 15 (Interfax) - The presidents of the CIS countries intend to sign a document envisaging a reduction of the number of the bodies of the Commonwealth at the summit in Bishkek on Friday, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov told reporters.

"The second important decision, important document is called On the Adaptation of the CIS to Today's Reality. This document states the measures that will boost the effectiveness of the organization and its bodies," Ushakov said.

Specifically, a proposal made by Kazakhstan envisages maximal unburdening of the agendas of meetings of the Heads of State Council, and also some reduction of the number of officials of the administrations of the Commonwealth bodies.

"However, the main thing in this document is that the leaders will emphasize a wish and a commitment to keep the Commonwealth a full-fledged international organization," Ushakov said.

"In addition, the working mechanisms and various areas of CIS cooperation will remain and be modified. It is quite a useful document which kind of sets the future work within the CIS in light of the changing environments, both international and regional ones," he said.

The document reflects the wishes made by various members, including Kazakhstan, which was the first one to suggest considering modifying the CIS working system. Also taken into account are proposals made by the other states, for instance, Belarus and Russia.
