NATO secretary general plans meeting with Russian foreign minister in New York

BRUSSELS. Sept 16 (Interfax) - The NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expects to have a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Robert Pshel, head of NATO's Information Office in Moscow, said.

NATO expects that the meeting of Stoltenberg and Lavrov will take place in New York, Pshel said at a seminar of editors and reporters working on EU subjects in Brussels on Friday.

He said that a political dialogue of Russia and NATO will continue, despite the relations between the alliance and Russia being at the lowest point.

The alliance is not interested in a confrontation with Russia, however, it considers reinforcement of NATO's eastern flank the best framework for a dialogue, he said.

Acting NATO spokesperson Carmen Romero said on September 15 that the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg "looks forward to discussing these issues and next steps with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the near future."

Pshel also said that an ambassadorial meeting of the NATO-Russia Council may take place in the near future.
