Police looking into overnight incident near Russian Embassy in Kyiv, involved individuals

KYIV. Sept 17 (Interfax) - Police are looking into circumstances of the overnight attack on the Russian Embassy in Ukraine situated at Povitroflotskyi Prospect in Kyiv.

The Kyiv police communication department told Interfax that the Solomenska police station was informed about an act of hooliganism committed near the Embassy at Povitroflotskyi Prospect at around 1 a.m.

An investigative team arrived at the scene and found out that about 20 persons wearing balaclavas approached the Embassy, installed something that looked like a salute launcher, aimed it at the Embassy and fired a few shots several minutes later.

"No one was hurt in that incident. The building was damaged," the police said.

The policemen thoroughly examined the incident scene and seized the object from which the shots were fired.

The event was recorded in the unified register of statements and reports of the Solomenska police station. An inquiry is underway to establish circumstances of the event and the involved individuals.

A group of unknown people hurled a smoke grenade into premises of the Russian Embassy in Ukraine and used a salute launcher, the Embassy said earlier in the day.

"At around 1 a.m. unknown persons hurled a smoke grenade into Embassy premises and fired a salute launcher at its building. The shots directly targeted the Embassy building. Luckily, they did not spark a fire," the Embassy told Interfax.

"There were about 20 assailants. Local police did not detain them," the Embassy said.
