Poroshenko compares situation in Syria with that in eastern Ukraine

NEW YORK. Sept 21 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko told the UN Security Council that Russia's actions in Syria are similar to those in Donbas.

The support that the regime of [Syrian President Bashar] al-Assad gets from beyond, from Russia in particular, played a significant role in the emergence of the current disastrous situation and constant recurrence of violence, Poroshnko said at the UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday.

Like in Ukraine, this was part of Russia's deliberate policy that included initiating hostilities, raising the stakes and then offering services of an intermediary in the settlement of the conflict, Poroshenko added.

This is very much like the situation in Ukraine, which, unfortunately, remains a range where Russia tests such approaches, Poroshenko said.
