Former foreign minister of Abkhazia says he resigned because he couldn't meet with president
SUKHUM. Sept 22 (Interfax) - Abkhazia's former foreign minister Vyacheslav Chirikba said his resignation is not connected to his refusal to pay a working visit to Transdniestria.
"I filed my resignation back on August 31 because I could not meet with the president of Abkhazia for a long time. That situation complicated normal functioning of the Abkhaz Foreign Ministry," Chirikba told Interfax on Thursday.
"I don't understand and I don't know what caused this situation," he said.
Speaking about the statement by the Abkhaz presidential press service saying that his resignation is connected to his refusal to visit Transdniestria, Chirikba said: "Apparently, it's an attempt to find a formal pretext for my resignation, but not the reason."
Chirikba was appointed foreign minister of the republic in October 2011. He led the Abkhaz delegation in the Geneva discussions on security and stability in Transcaucasia for many years.
Chirikba said he was filing his resignation on Wednesday.
