Brigade in Russia's Southern Military District to be armed with latest Buk-M3 air defense missile system by end of 2016 - Ground Forces commander (Part-2)
MOSCOW. Oct 1 (Interfax) - A brigade stationed in the southern part of Russia will be armed with the latest Buk-M3 air defense missile system by the end of 2016, Russian Ground Forces Commander Col. Gen. Oleg Salyukov said.
"The said weapon will be delivered to one of the brigades in the Southern Military District in 2016," Salyukov told journalists in an interview in the run-up to Day of Ground Forces.
The Buk-M3 is a highly jam-resistant air defense system. One such self-propelled system can fire simultaneously at six aerial targets, he said.
The Buk air defense system is a multi-channel highly-mobile multifunctional system designed to intercept strategic and tactical aircraft, helicopters, including hovercraft, guided missiles, guided air bombs, and other aerodynamic aerial objects within the entire range of their possible application. It can also be used to attack overwater and ground radio-contrast targets.
The system is used to protect facilities from aerial assault, including amid the enemy's intensive radio-electronic and fire actions.
The Buk-M3 has been developed by the Tikhomirov instrument design research institute located in the town of Zhukovsky, the Dolgoprudny research and production association, and the Start research and production association named after Yaskin (Yekaterinburg). It is manufactured by the Ulyanovsk Mechanical Plant and the Kalinin Machine-Building Plant (Yekaterinburg).
