U.S. decided to suspend cooperation with Russia on Syria because U.S. did not fulfill its obligations - Lavrov

MOSCOW. Oct 9 (Interfax) - The United States has decided to suspend cooperation with Russia on Syria because Washington did not fulfill its obligations as part of the achieved agreements, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with the Channel One television station's Sunday Time information and analytical program.

The U.S. proved unable to separate the moderate opposition from militants and unblock the Castello road to allow humanitarian aid to be delivered to the eastern part of Aleppo, he said.

"The Americans said that they are unable to live up to this commitment either because opposition members are not listening to them," Lavrov said.

"It is because they did not fulfill their obligations on this Castello road with regard to the opposition's withdrawal, the Americans obviously decided not really to 'slam the door', but announce their withdrawal or suspension of these agreements' implementation. They tried to present what they had in such a way," he said.

Separating the moderate opposition from militants was Washington's first obligation, Lavrov said.

"The very first obligation was to delineate the moderate opposition, with which the American coalition is working, from terrorists. It has not been fulfilled so far, even though in February they promised us to do it within two weeks," he said.

The U.S. said earlier this week that it had suspended interaction with Russia on the truce in Syria.
