Abkhazian opposition members suggest president step down
SUKHUM. Oct 24 (Interfax) - The opposition in Abkhazia is going to offer early resignation to the president of the republic, Raul Khadjimba, according to Aslan Bzhaniya, one of the leaders of the Opposition Forces Bloc and head of the Apra (Sail) foundation for socio-economic and political studies.
"We are going to ask President Raul Khadjimba once again so that he, having weighed all pros and cons, makes a decision to step down early. This is our vision, this is what we will be seeking to achieve in the very term, again providing such views are being shared by a majority of our population," he told a press conference in Sukhum on Monday.
Over the next two or three weeks, the opposition will hold meetings with residents in regions, Bzhaniya said. "Meetings will tell everything. If suddenly it so happens that the president fails to hear us and the masses will be increasingly in the mood to perceive what happens negatively, we will be preparing for people's get-together," he said.
"The socio-political situation in the republic is critical and dangerous," the opposition representative said. "I am deeply convinced that by acting unprofessionally the president and his team led the country to the brink, to the line of danger to national security," he said.
"There is no sign of positive changes, neither in the economy, nor in the social sector," he said.
"Take our economy: we are seeing processes of a destructive, devastating nature. Of particular concern is the work of our law enforcement agencies, the work of our judiciary. We cannot put up with this any longer. On the whole, [judging] by the totality of those actions undertaken by the country's leadership, we could have a very serious social implosion," Bzhaniya said.
