FSB investigating case over armed attack in Nizhny Novgorod

NIZHNY NOVGOROD. Oct 24 (Interfax) - The investigative department of the Russian Federal Security Service branch for the Nizhny Novgorod region has opened and is investigating a criminal case over an armed attack on the employees of the law enforcement agencies in Nizhny Novgorod last Sunday, the agency said in a statement.

While the employees of the law enforcement agencies were checking a Daewoo Nexia car at 8 a.m. on October 23 in Akademik Sakharov Street, "the nationals [in the car] from the Central Asian region have perpetrated an armed assault."

"Two assailants have fired several rounds from the automatic rifles at the employees of the law enforcement agencies. Seeking to protect themselves from the attack with the use of violence dangerous for life and health, the employees opened retaliatory fire, as a result, the attackers sustained lethal injuries," the press release said.

As earlier reported, the Tsvety (flowers) residential area in Nizhny Novgorod had been cordoned off last Sunday due to the special operation, which the law enforcement forces had carried out.
