Russia ready for concrete work with NATO in providing flight safety over Baltic region - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. Oct 28 (Interfax) - Moscow is awaiting a constructive NATO reaction to its proposal to provide safety of the flights over the Baltic Region and is ready for concrete work on the matter, Andrei Kelin, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department for European Cooperation, said in an interview with Interfax.

Back in July Russia proposed to NATO to discuss flying military aircraft over the Baltic region with transponders on only, he said.

"So far NATO has shown no constructive reaction and no readiness to discuss our proposals," Kelin said.

"But since they have for two years been continually saying that flights by aircraft with switched-off transponders supposedly create tensions in Baltic airspace, we will be expecting from them a constructive reaction, and, for our part, are ready for concrete work on these issues," the high-ranking Russian diplomat said.

For now, there is "no practical discussion of our proposal," he said.

"There will be probably another meeting of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) soon where we will revisit this issue," Kelin said.

There is no specific date of the next NRC meeting, he said.
