Moscow commemorating victims of political repressions

MOSCOW. Oct 29 (Interfax) - A rally, entitled "The return of the names," which for ten years has been held on the eve of the day of remembrance of the victims of political repressions, is taking place in Moscow on Saturday.

The ceremony was opened by Russian ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova.

"Too much pain, but the state must find courage to atone for the misdeeds committed by the authorities during the years of repressions," Moskalkova told journalists after reading our the first names and laying flowers at a monument to the victims of repressions.

"This is always an edification to the other generations, young law enforcement officers, that untruth and a departure from the laws and conscience always come at a price," she said.

The rally was also attended by Mikhail Fedotov, head of the presidential council for human rights, and ex-ombudsman Vladimir Lukin.

For the first time since 2007 the international Memorial human rights group organized the event on the money raised from a crowdfunding campaign.

From 10 a.m. till 10 p.m. citizens will be reading out names of the people executed in Moscow during the years of Soviet terror.
