Frigate "Admiral Makarov" fires missiles against coastal target from Barents Sea - Defense Ministry
MOSCOW. Nov 2 (Interfax-AVN) - The Northern Fleet forces conducted a live fire drill during trials of the frigate "Admiral Makarov" in the Barents Sea, Northern Fleet spokesman Captain 1st rank Vadim Serga told Interfax-AVN on Wednesday.
"Today the Northern Fleet forces in the Barents Sea fired missiles against a coastal target from the frigate 'Admiral Makarov' which arrived in the North to accomplish a state trials program. Preliminary data suggest the shooting was successful," the spokesman said.
Project 11356 frigates are armed with "Kalibr-NK" cruise missiles.
"The missile firing practice was conducted by the frigate crew under thorough control over compliance with the safety requirements. The area of the missile firing practice in the Barents Sea was closed in advance to civil navigation," Serga said.
"To ensure safe navigation, around ten Northern Fleet ships and support vessels were on the mobile patrol line on the edge of the firing practice area, the area was also controlled by aircraft and helicopters from the Northern Fleet Air Force and Air Defense Army," he said.
While in the Barents Sea, the Northern Fleet forces are planning to test the frigate's missile, anti-aircraft and artillery weapons, he said.
The Project 11356 frigate "Admiral Makarov" was laid down at the Yantar shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) on February 29, 2012, and floated on September 2, 2015. The ship is due to enter service in the Russian Navy this year.
Like the previous two frigates of the same project, the "Admiral Makarov" is to join the Navy's Black Sea Fleet.
