Russia, Egypt implement significant number of provisions of plan to improve security at Egyptian airports - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. Nov 3 (Interfax) - Russia and Egypt have implemented most of the provisions of a plan to guarantee the necessary level of security at Egyptian airports, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"A joint plan of comprehensive measures has been adopted, whose implementation is designed to significantly improve the level of security at the airports of such cities as Cairo, Hurghada, and Sharm el-Sheikh and provide conditions to rule out a repeat of the October 31, 2015 tragedy. A significant number of this plan's provisions have already been implemented," Zakharova said at a news briefing on Thursday.

Russia earlier began consistent and intensive work with Egypt to improve aviation security at its airports, she said.

"The successful completion of the work in the planned areas will provide the necessary preconditions for resuming regular flights between our countries and the safe stay of Russian citizens at Egyptian resorts," Zakharova said.

A Russian Metrojet (Kogalymavia) Airbus A321, en route from Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg, crashed in the Sinai Peninsula on October 31, 2015, killing all 224 people on board.

Two weeks later, Russian special services qualified the crash as a terrorist attack caused by a bomb detonation onboard the airliner.
