Moscow aims for equal, undivided security architecture in Asia-Pacific region rather than union with China, Philippines - Russian ambassador

MOSCOW. Nov 7 (Interfax) - Russia is against military-political alliances of a narrow group of countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Russian Ambassador in Manila Igor Khovayev said in his remarks on the idea of a military union with Moscow and Beijing put forward by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

"Russia is invariably campaigning for equal and undivided security architecture in the Asia Pacific region rather than military-political alliances of a narrow range of selected countries. It is a matter of common knowledge who is advocating closed unions of the sort, and not just in the Asia Pacific region," he told Interfax in an interview.

"There should be efficient security for everyone, not just for a few and not to the detriment of the others. What is more, such alliances will unavoidably be at odds with integration processes, which are objective by their nature and therefore irreversible and which are gaining momentum in the Asia-Pacific region," the ambassador said.

Duterte said he deemed a military and economic union with Russia and China to be possible.
