Moldovan president hopes relations with U.S. not to change after Trump's victory

CHISINAU. Nov 9 (Interfax) - The United States' support to Moldova will not change following Donald Trump's election as president, Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti said.

"The U.S. has supported Moldova regardless of who the president has been. During the period of our independence, the U.S. has provided support to Moldova in the total amount of $1.4 billion. I am confident that our relations will develop increasingly and that support for democracy, rule of law and the European path of Moldova will take shape [in the form] of new joint projects," Timofti told reporters at the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau, where he and other politicians went to follow vote tallying in the U.S., on Wednesday.

"The choice of the American people is an exercise in democracy, which should mobilize us on Sunday, when we will elect the president of the Republic," he said.

U.S. Ambassador to Moldova James Pettit said he also believes that after the election of the new U.S. president relations with Moldova will not undergo significant changes.

Moldovan presidential candidate from the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon wrote on Facebook that with Trump's election "America went red." "America got dressed in red and it will be so in Moldova after the election on November 13," Dodon said.

Dodon will compete with Maia Sandu, single candidate from the right-wing pro-European parties, in the second round of the election on Sunday.
