Orenburg region resident gets two years in penal colony for attempt to join ISIL
ORENBURG. Nov 21 (Interfax) - The Volga District Military Court has handed out a sentence to a resident of the Orenburg region charged with an attempt to join the international ISIL terrorist organization, which is banned in Russia.
The resident of the village of Dombarovsky established contacts with militants of this terrorist organization via the Internet in late 2015, the press service for the Federal Security Service's department for the Orenburg region reported on Monday.
In March 2016, he was detained at the Orenburg airport "while trying to leave for the Syrian Arab Republic to participate in the activities of the international terrorist organization ISIL against Syrian government troops," the report said.
The man was earlier trained in ISIL camps in Turkey and Syria, the press service said.
In the course of the investigation, he fully admitted his guilt and confessed to the crime.
The court found him guilt of "preparing to participate in the activities of a terrorist organization" and sentenced him to two years and two months in a penal colony.
"He is the third person convicted for a terrorist crime in the territory of the Orenburg region in 2016," the press service said.
