Kremlin closely following election campaign in France
MOSCOW. Nov 22 (Interfax) - Moscow is closely following the course of the presidential election campaign in France, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.
"It is with great attention that we are watching the course of the election campaign and the primaries in France," he told reporters after being asked to comment on the fact that former French Prime Minister Francois Fillon had received the majority of votes in the first round of the right-wing and centrist parties' primaries.
"France is our partner, a country with which Russia maintains good relations and the volume of cooperation with which could be much larger than it is today," Peskov said.
Relations between Putin and Fillon were established when Putin served as Russia's prime minister, the spokesman said.
"They had quite intense contacts. They spent more than one hour holding talks, concrete talks. At that time, quite creative work was still underway in terms of building bilateral relations," Peskov said.
"And, indeed, they have quite good relations," he added.
