Russian Southern Military District confirms death of 3 paratroopers after landing into river
ROSTOV-ON-DON. Nov 26 (Interfax) - Three servicemen of the Novorossiysk unit of the Russian Airborne Forces died during a landing exercise on Thursday, as they landed into a river and could not disengage themselves from their parachutes, the Southern Military District press service reported on Saturday.
"The press service of the Southern Military District confirms the fact of death of three servicemen of the Airborne Forces' Novorossiysk unit, who landed onto the water surface of the Kuban river, outside of the planned landing site, during a landing exercise on November 24," a spokesperson for the Southern Military District told Interfax on Saturday.
"Preliminary findings indicate that, due to a low cloud ceiling, the servicemen failed to unbuckle the parachute systems once in the water. A commission of the Airborne Forces command together with law enforcement agencies is working at the scene," he said.
