Russian Federation Council member: Castro's death is epochal event
MOSCOW. Nov 26 (Interfax) - Fidel Castro's death is an epochal event, Russian Federation Council international affairs committee head Konstantin Kosachyov said.
"Fidel Castro has passed away. This is not just an end of an era. It ended during his life in some way, as the U.S. sanctions against Cuba were lifted and its relations with the European Union were normalized, which can be seen as a victory of this small country and personally of the Cuban revolution leader," Kosachyov said on Facebook.
"But, of course, Castro was a symbol, just as was his brother-in-arms Che Guevara. Almost all of his exciting life, starting with the legendary debarkation from the yacht Granma, he has served as an example to many in the world, especially in Latin America, as a man of unconquerable will, revolutionary romanticism, and sincere belief in the idea," he said.
"Cuba did not become an oasis of prosperity under him," Kosachyov said. "And perhaps it didn't become an island of freedom to the extent that the Castro brothers wished it to. And yet he proved that, as the classic said, ideas become a material force as soon as they have gripped the masses. I would add, when they have such fiery advocates as Fidel," he said.
"He has always loved our country and our people. This is perhaps the main reason why he remained popular and beloved in Russia even after it stopped being the bulwark of Communist ideology. Russia continued to support Cuba and personally Fidel Castro even after 1991. Goodbye, era," Kosachyov said.
It was reported earlier that Castro, 90, died in Cuba on Friday evening. His death was reported by local television. NBC News said Castro would be cremated on Saturday.
