Uzbek CEC officially recognizes Mirziyoyev as elected president

TASHKENT. Dec 9 (Interfax) - The Central Elections Commission (CEC) of Uzbekistan at its meeting on Friday passed a resolution on the outcome of the presidential election held on December 4.

"The Central Elections Commission resolved to regard Shavkat Miromonovich Mirziyoyev as being elected to the post of the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan," CEC head Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov said at a briefing for the press.

He said that 15,906,724 people or 88.61% of voters taking part in the election had cast their ballots for him.

Abdusalomov said that the presidential election is of enormous historical significance for the future of Uzbekistan that is consistently moving along the road of building a democratic law-governed state and strong civil society.

"The election demonstrated a high level of legal culture and political activeness of the public," he stressed.

Earlier reports said Mirziyoyev had been nominated by the Movement of Entrepreneurs and Businessmen - the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan.

His rivals were Hotamzhon Ketmonov, leader of the People's Democratic Party (he collected 3.73% of the vote), Sarvar Otamuradov, deputy speaker of the lower house of parliament and representative of the National Revival Democratic Party (2.35%), and , Narimon Umarov, leader of the Justice Social Democratic Party (3.46%).

The early presidential election in Uzbekistan was held following the death of President Islam Karimov on September 2 at the age of 78 after suffering a stroke.

In the previous presidential election in 2015, turnout was slightly smaller at 91.08%. Karimov then reaped 90.39% of the vote and his three rivals collected between 2.05% and 3.08% of the vote.
