Turkmen Democratic Party approves Berdimuhamedow's nomination for president in 2017
ASHGABAT. Dec 15 (Interfax) - Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow has been nominated for president in the February 2017 elections, the Turkmen state news agency said.
The unanimous decision was made at the Democratic Party's conference on December 14.
The Democratic Party Council adopted a resolution, which was submitted to the Turkmen Central Elections and Referenda Commission.
The conference took place at the Center of Public Organizations in Ashgabat, and the nomination procedure was organized consistent with Article 44 of the Electoral Code.
The Turkmen Central Elections and Referenda Commission announced the beginning of the election campaign on October 24, 2016. The nomination of candidates began 60 days before the presidential elections, which would take place on February 12, 2017, as prescribed by the national laws.
The nomination is in progress. The candidate of the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs will be named on December 15, and the Agrarian Party will nominate its candidate on December 17.
Campaign groups are collecting at least 10,000 signatures, which are required for registering their presidential candidates in accordance with the Electoral Code.
The registration of candidates will begin on December 24, and their media campaigns and meetings with voters will follow.
