Buk-M2 air defense systems will no longer be supplied to army - Russian Air Defense Troops chief

MOSCOW. Dec 24 (Interfax) - Supplies of the Buk-M2 air defense systems to the army have concluded, Russian Land Forces' Air Defense Troops chief Lt. Gen. Alexander Leonov said.

"There will be no more supplies of Buk-M2," Leonov said on the Ekho Moskvy radio station.

The Buk-M3 air defense systems will be supplied to the army further on, he said.

The Buk-M2 air defense system designed and manufactured by the Almaz-Antey concern is a multirole highly mobile medium-range missile system. It is designed to destroy objects of strategic and combat aviation, such as aircraft, helicopters, missiles and other aerodynamic vehicles. Buk-M2 is capable of resisting the enemy force even under intense gunfire.

The newest BUK-M3 medium-range air defense system has no world analogues in its class. In particular, the system has been armed with new missiles, the lesser weight of which significantly increases the payload. Another characteristic of the system is that missiles are carried in a launch container.
