Over 900 terrorism-related crimes recorded in Dagestan in 2016 - prosecutors

MAKHACHKALA. Dec 28 (Interfax) - Law enforcement agencies in Dagestan have recorded hundreds of terrorism-related crimes and have not allowed a single terrorist attack to occur in the outgoing year, the Dagestani prosecutor's office told Interfax.

"The republic's prosecutor's office held a coordinating conference of heads of law enforcement agencies. Speaking at it, Dagestan Prosecutor Ramazan Shakhnavazov said 62 extremist crimes (a decline of 18%) and 907 terrorism-related crimes (growth of 43%) were recorded in the republic in the first 11 months of this year, the office said.

Among these, 581 crimes concern involvement in or complicity with illegal armed groups, including 477, or 82%, committed by members of the Dagestani criminal underworld outside Russia, he said.

Owing to measures taken by law enforcement bodies, no terrorist attacks were committed in Dagestan in 2015 and 2016, he said.

These measures have also helped prevent 124 Dagestani residents from going abroad to engage in terrorist activities, he said.

"At the same time, only 19 of them have been prosecuted for attempting to join illegal armed groups," he said.
