Russian Defense Ministry publishes lists of groups that have joined ceasefire in Syria

MOSCOW. Dec 29 (Interfax) - The opposition groups that have joined the ceasefire in Syria comprise about 50,000 people, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The Russian Defense Ministry published the list of the armed groups in Syria that have joined the ceasefire which will take effect at midnight on December 30.

Faylaq al-Sham is on the list of the groups, it comprises 19 units. "A total number of the Faylaq al-Sham militants are over 4,000 people. The group's units carry out hostilities in provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, Hama and Homs," the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The second group is Ahrar al-Sham. "The full title of the group is Harakat Ahrar al-Sham al-Islamiyya. The movement includes over 80 units. The total number of the Ahrar al-Sham militants is about 16,000 people. Ahrar al-Sham units are carrying out hostilities in the provinces of Aleppo, Damascus, Daraa, Idlib, Latakia, Hama and Homs," the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The third group is Jaysh al-Islam, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, it comprises 64 units. "The total number of militants is about 12,000 people. The Jaysh al-Islam units are carrying out hostilities in the provinces of Aleppo, Damascus, Daraa, Deir ez-Zor, Latakia, Hama and Homs," the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The fourth group is Suvar al-Sham. "The group comprises 8 battalions. The total number of militants is about 2,500 people. The group's units are carrying out hostilities in the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib and Latakia," the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The fifth group is Jaysh al-Mujahideen, it comprises 13 units. According to the Defense Ministry, the total number of militants is about 8,000 people. "The Jaysh al-Mujahideen units are carrying out hostilities in the city of Aleppo, the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib and Hama," the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Jaysh Idlib is the sixth group that has joined the ceasefire. "The group comprises three large units. The total number of militants is about 6,000 people. Jaysh Idlib is carrying out hostilities in the province of Idlib," the ministry said.

The seventh group is Jabhat al-Shamiyah. "It comprises five large units. The total number is about 3,000 people. The group's units are carrying out hostilities in the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib and Damascus," the ministry said.

Russian President Putin said earlier that the agreements on a ceasefire in Syria and readiness to begin peace talks were reached.

Three documents have been signed. The first document is between the Syrian government and the armed opposition on a ceasefire in the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic. The second document is a package of measures to control the ceasefire regime. And the third document is a statement on readiness to begin peace talks on the Syrian settlement.
