Russia, Italy sign memorandum on cooperation in fight against terrorism, drug trafficking, corruption

MOSCOW. Jan 12 (Interfax) - The Russian Prosecutor General's Office intends to cooperate with Italian colleagues in the fight against terrorism and extremism, corruption and drug trafficking.

Russian Prosecutor General Yury Chaika and the head of the Italian Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Directorate Franco Roberti signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation between the two agencies in Moscow on Thursday, the press service for the Prosecutor General's Office said.

"The document determines the main directions of the sides' cooperation in relevant fields of their activity, such as the fight against the most dangerous crimes, including terrorism and extremism, trafficking in drugs and psychoactive substances, cybercrime, human trafficking, illicit arms and ammunition trafficking and laundering of money obtained by criminal means," the press service said.

The sides will cooperate in order to facilitate the execution of requests for assistance, the Prosecutor General's Office said.

The press service also said that the delegation heads agreed to host a football championship between the prosecutor's offices of Italy and Russia in the second half of 2017.

Russian Deputy Prosecutor General Saak Karapetyan, Italian Deputy National Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor Eugenia Pontassuglia, Consul Ambassador of the Italian Embassy to Russia Michele Tomassi and others participated in the event.

On the same day, Chaika and his Hungarian counterpart Peter Polt signed a third cooperation program between the prosecutor's offices of the two countries for 2017-2018.

The Russian prosecutor general said that two cooperation programs were successfully fulfilled as part of the implementation of the agreement on cooperation between the prosecutor general's offices of Russia and Hungary signed in 2008.

"Experts from the prosecutor's offices shared their experience in organizing work in the field of the fight against cross-border crime, criminal procedure and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including outside the area of criminal law," the press service said.
