Tajik interior minister reports prevention of 36 terror attacks over past year
DUSHANBE. Jan 20 (Interfax) - As many as 36 terror attacks were prevented in Tajikistan in 2016, and 50 persons were arrested on the counts of terrorism plotting, Tajik Interior Minister Ramazon Rahimzoda told a press conference on Friday.
Most of the attempted perpetrators are citizens of Tajikistan, members of the banned terrorist organization ISIL, he said.
Tajik law enforcement agencies neutralized 34 organized criminal groups, detaining 169 of their members, last year, the minister said.
Speaking of the situation on Tajikistan's border with Afghanistan, Rahimzoda said it was quiet for now although they had information about terrorist groups accumulating in the Afghan territory.
"We are monitoring the activity of these groups together with the Afghan authorities in order to prevent their crossing into the territory of Tajikistan," the minister said.
