Lavrov calls ISIL terrorists' actions in Syrian Palmyra 'barbarity'
MOSCOW. Jan 20 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called destruction of an amphitheater in Syria's Palmyra by militants of the ISIL terrorist group banned in Russia a "barbarity."
"Barbarians, that's what they are. This ideology is absolutely unacceptable for modern civilization," he said at a press conference following negotiations with his Kazakh counterpart Kairat Abdrakhmanov in Moscow on Friday.
"Until lightning strikes, the global community won't stir," Lavrov said.
The minister recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin "nearly a year and a half ago had offered to finally set aside double standards and everything else that hinders consolidation of efforts in fight against terrorism and create a truly universal anti-terrorism front."
An understanding of the need to join efforts in the fight against terrorism is currently increasing in the world, the minister said.
Lavrov said that Moscow "completely shares" the approach of the United States President-elect Donald Trump to the priority need to fight against ISIL.
"We expect that international cooperation, coordination of efforts of all major players on this anti-terrorism front will develop much more efficiently under new conditions," he said.
