Russia, Turkey and Iran plan to formalize joint intention to fight against ISIL in final document of Astana meeting - source
ASTANA. Jan 24 (Interfax) - Russia, Turkey and Iran are discussing the possibility of formalizing their intention in a final document on Syria in Astana to jointly combat Islamic State (ISIL) and Jabhat al-Nusra (both organizations outlawed in Russia) in Syria, as well as help separate the moderate opposition from terrorists, a source in the Turkish delegation told Interfax.
"We, as guarantor countries of the agreement on a truce in Syria following the Astana meeting, should reaffirm our intention to fight against Daesh [Arabic acronym for ISIL] and Jabhat al-Nusra and formalize it in the final statement," he said.
"We are also facing the task to separate the opposition from Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra on the ground in order to ensure the truce. We plan to spell out this goal in the statement as well," he said.
