Court upholds extension of FSO general's arrest - lawyer

MOSCOW. Jan 27 (Interfax) - Moscow's Third District Military Court has upheld the extension by three months the arrest of Federal Guard Service (FSO) Gen. Gennady Lopyrev, who is accused of corruption, his lawyer Ruslan Zakolyuzhny told Interfax.

"The court refused to grant our appeal. The decision made by the first-instance court was left unchanged," the lawyer said.

The lawyer earlier said his client is accused of taking a bribe in an amount of some six million rubles.

According to earlier reports, the 94th Garrison Military Court on November 26 ordered the arrest of Lopyrev until January 23 at investigators' request. The Third District Military Court later upheld that decision, rejecting the appeal filed by the defense lawyers.

The Investigative Committee press service earlier said a criminal case had been opened against Lopyrev on charges of receiving major bribes.

According to the investigators, Lopyrev accepted bribes from heads of a number of private companies for general patronage in concluding and carrying out government contracts on repair and maintenance services.

Lopyrev is charged with massive bribery. His lawyer said the general does not admit his guilt.

The criminal case was opened by the Investigative Committee's main directorate for special investigations jointly with the Federal Security Service (FSB) operative services based on materials provided by the Federal Guard Service.
