Arab League influence in Middle East will increase on condition of Syria's return to it - Lavrov
ABU DHABI. Feb 1 (Interfax) - The Arab League could play a more important role in the Middle East if Syria was included in it, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"It seems to me that the Arab League could play a more important, more effective role if the Syrian government was in this organization," Lavrov told reporters in Abu Dhabi.
"The fact that the Syrian government, a legitimate member of the United Nations Organization, cannot participate in Arab League discussions, of course, doesn't help our common efforts," Lavrov said.
Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Ghait, for his part, said the return of Syria to the Arab League is currently not being discussed. At the same time, he said some members of the Arab League may raise this issue.
