Moscow dismisses allegations on aiding Taliban to undermine NATO's positions in Afghanistan
MOSCOW. Feb 10 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry has flatly denied allegations made in the U.S. that Moscow is providing assistance to the Taliban to undermine Washington's and NATO's positions in Afghanistan.
"We have noticed another conspiracy theory fit - it's hard to call it otherwise - suffered by Gen. John Nicholson Jr., the commander of the U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan. He is claiming that Russia is assisting the Taliban with weapons to undermine the U.S.' and NATO's positions in Afghanistan. These groundless statements have been picked up by a well-known Russophobe, U.S. Senator John McCain," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a commentary posted on its website on Friday.
"All of this looks very much like fruitless attempts to accuse Russia of their own failures in Afghanistan affairs," it said.
"This could probably help score some political points among certain quarters in Washington, but this can't improve the dismal security situation in Afghanistan," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
