Saakashvili supporters try to break into Tbilisi mayor's office
TBILISI. Feb 13 (Interfax) - Several dozen supporters of the opposition party United National Movement tried to break into the building of the Tbilisi mayor's office on Monday, but were prevented from doing so by security guards and police.
The entrance to the mayor's office is now blocked by the rally participants, who want to meet with Tbilisi Mayor Davit Narmania and who have accused him of corruption.
Last week, representatives of the United National Movement, which is led by ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili, conducted a rally in support of the television company Rustavi 2, whose owner is now being determined by the Georgian Supreme court. The leaders of the United National Movement then announced that they were starting protest actions against the current administration this week.
United National Movement leader Nika Melia told reporters the party and its supporters have no intention of putting up with arbitrariness and lawlessness in Georgia. "We give the mayor several hours to meet with us, otherwise there will be a sea of people here and we will enter the building. The authorities are corrupt and people can no longer put up with it," Melia said.
The situation at the entrance to the mayor's office, where a crowd had gathered, has now stabilized.
