Document forming Syria ceasefire monitoring task force to be signed in Astana - Kazakh foreign minister

ASTANA. Feb 14 (Interfax) - Russia, Turkey and Iran plan to sign a document on setting up a task force to monitor the ceasefire in Syria following the intra-Syrian talks in Astana, Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov said.

"The information received from the guarantor-countries [Russia, Turkey and Iran] indicates that here they are going to sign a document on creating a task force to monitor the cessation of hostilities. It is necessary to wait a little and then address the guarantor-countries," Abdrakhmanov told reporters in Astana.

Such a task force already de facto exists and only has to be "formalized" now, "because this is one of the most important issues of this sort, because the wider the truce agreement is applied, the greater is the probability that peace, stability and order will eventually be restored in the territory of Syria," the minister said.

However, Abdrakhmanov declined to say whether the issue of Syria's constitution would be discussed at the Astana-2 meeting.

"Given the reports that we received from the guarantor-countries at some point, the Russian Federation offered its vision of the draft constitution. Further steps depend on all of the parties concerned. I cannot tell you now precisely [whether debates on the constitution have been included in the meeting's agenda]," he said.
