Turkmen CEC confirms election of Berdimuhamedow as president

ASHGABAT. Feb 15 (Interfax) - The Turkmen Central Election Commission (CEC) ruled to consider Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, who has gained the highest number of votes, elected Turkmen president, the country's state news agency reported on Wednesday.

It said that this was formalized by a CEC special decree. It was reported on February 14 at a meeting of the Central Commission on elections and the holding of referendums in Turkmenistan, at which the final outcomes of the election campaign for Turkmen presidential election, which was held on February 12, have been summarized.

New data indicating that 97.28%, or 3,163,692 voters, participated in the voting was announced at the meeting.

The CEC decree determined the day of inauguration of the president-elect of the country, the news agency also reported. At the same time, the date was not announced.

According to the preliminary results of the elections 3,140,865 people or 97.27% of registered voters cast their votes, the CEC said earlier. It said that Berdimuhamedow mustered the largest percentage of votes of 97.69%.

New voting data was announced in the final returns.
