DPR militia reports nearly 600 overnight attacks by Ukrainian army

DONETSK. Feb 16 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian army has fired almost 600 shots from rocket launchers, artillery and tank guns on ten frontline districts of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic since Wednesday evening, the Donetsk news agency said with reference to a source in DPR security agencies.

"In the period from 6 p.m. [Wednesday] till 1:30 a.m. [Thursday], the Ukrainian army fired 595 shots from a Grad rocket launcher, 122mm and 152mm artillery, tank guns, and 82mm and 120mm mortars on the vicinity of the Volvo Center, Donetsk Airport, the outskirts of Yasynuvata, the villages of Spartak, Zhabycheve, Kruta Balka, Yakovlivka and Vasylivka in the Yasynuvata district, and Sakhanka and Leninske in the Novoazovsk district," the source said.

The Ukrainian military also fired dozens of shots from infantry fighting vehicle weapons and various types of grenade launchers. Heavy machineguns and small arms were also engaged in the hostilities, the news agency said.

The Pokrov district department of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry in the Donetsk region said, for its part, that the DPR militia's artillery shelled residential areas in the old town in Avdiivka last night, damaging several private houses and starting a devastating fire in another. There have been no casualty reports, police said.

The militia shelled the residential area near the industrial zone, police said, adding that fragments hit eight houses and one house on Kolosova Street burned down as a result of a direct hit.
