Leadership crisis at Green Cross Intl should be solved at Green Cross general assembly - Gorbachev

MOSCOW. Feb 22 (Interfax) - The ex-president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, said the current situation within the board of directors at Green Cross International, an international nonprofit organization, is not normal.

Speaking in an interview with Interfax he criticized the current "mess in this public and very respected world organization, with some members of the board of directors, most of whom are in Geneva (where the organization is headquartered), trying to seize the organization and its leadership in their favor."

"I think that they are now trying to weaken this organization in order to grab the tastiest chunk there. This is terrible. This organization should be saved. It was created by veterans of politics and culture. It cooperates with the UN and other international organizations, has 34 offices across the world. This is a planetary public organization, and I made very many efforts to create and strengthen it," Gorbachev said.

Asked by Interfax what he thinks should be done now to restore normal relations within the organization, Gorbachev said he is convinced "of the need to call a Green Cross general assembly and to resolve all issues. However the group, which is causing the mess, has been actively resisting this, aware that the general assembly might give it a spanking."

"The leadership crisis should be solved by calling a general assembly, which is in line with the charter of this organization," Gorbachev said.

The Green Cross International was founded by ex-USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993. The organization, which operates in more than 30 countries, addresses environmental issues.
