Mehriban Aliyeva not to run for Azerbaijani president
BAKU. Feb 27 (Interfax) - Mehriban Aliyeva, spouse of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Azerbaijani First Vice-President, has no intention to run for president.
"I have not thought about it before and I am not thinking about it now," Aliyeva said in Dmitry Kiselyov's Vesti Nedeli (VGTRK) television program, answering a question as to whether she had ever considered heading the country as president.
Aliyeva said she would be defending the interests of Azerbaijan. "Yes, I will be defending the interests of Azerbaijan. Yes, I will be defending the interests of the Azerbaijani people. This is how it will be for now. It is totally unproductive to speculate about what may happen in the future," she said.
Azerbaijan will have the next presidential election in fall 2018.
