AgMin plans to include class 1, 2 wheat in grain interventions

MOSCOW. March 17 (Interfax) - Russia's Agriculture Ministry plans to include class 1 and class 2 hard wheat in its grain interventions, market sources familiar with the documents being prepared told Interfax.

"Class 1 and class 2 wheat may be included in the list of grain bought by the state with the intervention fund," one of the sources said.

At the same time, he admitted that Russia's harvest of that type of grain in the last few years was "vanishingly small," even though in the middle of the 1980's the share of hard wheat in the overall wheat harvest was over 25% and up to 50% in the North Caucasus.

"The inclusion of hard wheat in interventions is needed in order to give a signal to agriculture producers that that kind of grain is needed by the state and its production is profitable," he said.

According to experts, the purchasing price of the grain should total 11,000-12,000 rubles per tonne.

Russia's Agriculture Ministry has not yet commented on the information.
