Japanese defense minister hopes for fair discussion of security issues, building of confidence between Japan, Russia

TOKYO. March 20 (Interfax) - Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada has expressed hope for building confidence between Tokyo and Moscow.

"Hopefully, today we will have a frank exchange of opinions on Asia-Pacific security issues and ways to build confidence between Russia and Japan," Inada said at the 2+2 Russian-Japanese consultations on Monday.

She said she had a frank discussion on defense policy affairs and the regional situation, including the North Korea issue, with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in the morning.

Today's meeting in the 2+2 format is of paramount importance, "considering the aggravating security environment around Japan and Russia," the minister said.
