No alternative to constitutional process in Syria - Russian parliamentarian
ALEPPO, Syria. March 21 (Interfax) - The launch of the constitutional process in Syria is the path Damascus must take towards settling its national crisis, according to Russian Duma Deputy Speaker Vladimir Vasilyev who is leading a delegation of Russian and European parliamentarians that arrived in Syria.
"We are convinced that there is no alternative to this process," Vasilyev said at a meeting with senior Aleppo officials led by Governor Hussein Diab on Tuesday.
After visiting the Russian reconciliation center in Hmeimum on Tuesday, the delegation flew to Aleppo where security has been tightened in preparation for the visit.
It is crucial to secure Syrian government and parliamentary backing for the idea of advancing the constitutional process, Vasilyev said.
"The courageous people of Syria have many friends and there are more and more of them now," the delegation head said.
