Case against Voronenkov may be closed with relatives' consent if death officially confirmed - Russian Investigative Committee

MOSCOW. March 23 (Interfax) - Russian investigators have not yet received official information on former State Duma deputy Denis Voronenkov's death, Svetlana Petrenko, a Russian Investigative Committee spokesperson, told Interfax on Thursday.

"The investigators have not received any official information on the death of Denis Voronenkov, who is implicated in a criminal case," Petrenko said.

"If we receive official confirmation of his death, the law stipulates that either the criminal case shall be closed on non-rehabilitating grounds with the consent of the victim's relatives, or, if there is no such consent, this criminal case shall be forwarded to courts to be heard on its merits," Petrenko said.

Voronenkov was killed in central Kyiv on Thursday. His bodyguard was wounded but managed to wound the shooter as well.

It was reported in mid February that Voronenkov, a former State Duma deputy, who had left for Ukraine together with his wife, Maria Maksakova, also a former State Duma deputy (United Russia faction) and an opera singer, received Ukrainian citizenship in December 2016. Speaking about the reasons for his departure in an interview with Ukrainian media, Voronenkov harshly criticized the political situation in Russia.

In Russia, Voronenkov was implicated in a fraud case and was put on the federal wanted list.
