Unauthorized rally taking place in central St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG. March 26 (Interfax) - An unauthorized rally is taking place in the Field of Mars in St. Petersburg on Sunday.

Earlier opposition activists filed several applications for protests to be held in various parts of the city but all of them were turned down. The event at the Field of Mars was not permitted because of a National Liberation Movement (NLM) rally taking place there on the same day.

NLM supporters are using loudspeakers and flags, their event is about protecting traditional moral and family values.

Meanwhile, the opposition rally is taking place in another part of the Field of Mars.

Police are not interfering with the rally, the assembled have not yet been asked to leave.
