Moldovan anti-corruption agency conducting searches at Moldova Economy Ministry
CHISINAU. March 31 (Interfax) - Officers from Moldova's National Center for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption (CCECC) are conducting searches at several office rooms of the Ministry of Economy in the Moldovan government building.
An CCECC spokesperson asked the press not to name specific Economy Ministry officials who may be suspected of corruption. "Upon conclusion of the searches prosecutors will give full information to the press," the spokesperson told Interfax.
An informed source told Interfax earlier that, according to unofficial reports, the reason for the searches was "one of high-ranking officials at the Ministry of Economy being suspected of corruption."
The source did not rule out that this might have to do with a tender to decide on an electricity supplier to Moldova for the April 1, 2017 - March 31, 2018 period, the deadline for which expired at 3 p.m. Moldovan time on Friday, the source said.
Meanwhile, Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Octavian Calmac is in Belgium on Friday as part of a Moldovan government delegation led by Prime Minister Pavel Filip.
