Turnout in Armenian parliamentary elections tops 33%

YEREVAN. April 2 (Interfax) - The turnout in the Armenian parliamentary elections on Sunday has reached 33.46% (865,884 voters) by 2 p.m. (1 p.m. Moscow time) on Sunday, Seyran Shakhsuvaryan, deputy head of the Armenian Central Election Commission (CEC), said.

There are 2,587,706 people with a voting right in Armenia, he said. There is no required minimum turnout for parliamentary elections.

All 2,008 polling stations across Armenia opened at 7 a.m. Moscow time (8 a.m. local time) this morning.

This is the first election to the National Assembly since the republic switched to the parliamentary system. Five parties and four partisan blocs are standing for parliament.

Polling stations will stay open until 8 p.m. (7 p.m. Moscow time).

Meanwhile, during the national referendum on the constitutional form of governance in December 2015 the turnout by 2 p.m. (1 p.m. Moscow time) had reached 24.26% (622,643 out of the total 25,550,323 voters).
