Zyuganov calls U.S. strikes on Syrian airbase challenge to whole world
MOSCOW. April 7 (Interfax) - The strikes delivered by the United States upon the Shayrat airbase in Syria is an act of aggression and a challenge not only to Syria but also to the entire global community, Russian Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov told Interfax on Friday.
"It is an act of cynical and brazen aggression by the Americans against a sovereign state. Aggression for which [U.S. President Donald] Trump and his team did not even obtain the Senate's consent, and they by law have no right to begin military action without that. It's a challenge not only to Syria and its President Bashar al-Assad, but primarily to the entire global community," Zyuganov said.
"The U.S. actions in Syria go against Trump's pre-election promises and look like open provocation," he said.
Zyuganov said the Russian military is acting in Syria "to liberate it from gunmen, not to occupy the country." Moreover, the actions by the Russian Aerospace Forces have been supported by the legitimate administration of Syria, and they were broadly approved worldwide, the politician said.
There has recently been "a common wish to finish off the terrorists" worldwide, "but the predatory essence of America was again manifested here."
"In this respect, our administration should hold consultations with all influential political forces. I believe the president should call not only the Security Council, but also the State Council," Zyuganov said.
He called on the Russian authorities "to take exhaustive measures and, besides all other things, strengthen all its internal positions as much as possible."
"We need to hold consultations at the level of BRICS and the SCO. Real steps need to be made in the area of defense, economy, science, and education of the youth; we need to strengthen our Eurasian Union more energetically," Zyuganov said.
