Ukrainian army, militia continue to exchange fire despite Easter truce agreement
DONETSK/KYIV. April 14 (Interfax) - The self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) has seen 58 attacks of the Ukrainian army in the past 24 hours.
"The Ukrainian army breached the truce 58 times over the past day. In all, the Ukrainian army attacked 19 populated localities in the republic, using artillery, tanks, mortars, infantry combat vehicles, armored personnel carriers, anti-aircraft guns, grenade launchers, and small arms," a DPR Defense Ministry spokesman told reporters on Friday.
The conflicting sides agreed in Minsk on Wednesday to put an Easter ceasefire into place at 10 a.m. on April 13, yet truce breaches were observed on Thursday.
For its part, Kyiv reported 65 attacks on Ukrainian army positions over the past day and the injury of two Ukrainian soldiers.
"Sixty-five attacks on Ukrainian army positions were recorded over the past day. Two Ukrainian servicemen sustained injuries," the army operation staff said on Facebook.
The Mariupol sector remains the focus of confrontations. For instance, the militia fired 122mm artillery, 120mm mortars, infantry combat vehicle weapons and heavy machineguns on Ukrainian positions near Vodyane, the staff said.
In the Donetsk sector, Ukrainian positions came under attack of 120mm and 82mm mortars, various types of grenade launchers and heavy machineguns near Avdiivka.
"In the Luhansk sector, various types of grenade launchers were fired on the defenders of Novooleksandrivka and Katerynivka," the staff said.
