Moldovan president proposes mixed electoral system enabling Transdniestrian residents to vote

CHISINAU. April 18 (Interfax) - Moldovan President Igor Dodon has proposed a mixed system of parliamentary elections.

"I suggest that we switch to a mixed electoral system, in which 51 deputies will be elected on party tickets and 50 in single-member constituencies. I suggest that we elect 25 deputies representing labor migrants and the Transdniestrian district, and the other 25 deputies from the rest of the republic. Before the conflict is settled, Transdniestrian residents should have an opportunity to cast their ballots at polling stations on the eastern bank of the Dniester River," Dodon said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

He criticized the ruling coalition's idea to replace the proportionate electoral system with the one using the plurality voting method, admitting at the same time that the system actually required an improvement.

Dodon urged the parliamentary majority to withdraw its bill on a single-member electoral system, noting that "otherwise, the authorities should realize all the risks they would assume."
