Moldovan president said he may call for boycotting parliamentary election
CHISINAU. April 19 (Interfax) - Moldovan President Igor Dodon will not allow amending the electoral system endorsed by the ruling Democratic Party of Moldova (DPM) and its leader Vlad Plahotniuc, Dodon said.
"I see that Vlad Plahotniuc continues to insist on the introduction of the single-seat electoral system. It shows that the agreements pertaining to the voting and the introduction of the new provisions suggested by the parliamentary majority were fully reached, and not just in Chisinau. As a president, I will firmly prohibit introducing the singe-seat electoral system and will block by all available means the voting and possible entry into force of the democrats' bill on changing the electoral system in our country," Dodon said on Facebook.
It is not unlikely that he will call for boycotting the upcoming parliamentary election, if the parliamentary majority introduces the system of single-member constituencies, the Moldovan president said.
"If there are aces up the parliamentary majority's sleeve, I will request all political parties of the Republic of Moldova to boycott the parliamentary election. At the same time I think that if the voting for the bill on the single-seat electoral system happens in the near future, as planned by the DPM and Plahotniuc, everyone should unite against this initiative and protest until the ruling partly finally surrenders and a snap election in the parliament is announced," the president said.
As reported, Dodon suggested switching to the mixed system of parliamentary elections. The legislative initiative suggests the election of 51 deputies on party lists and 50 in single-member constituencies. Dodon suggested that 25 deputies out of 50 should represent labor migrants staying abroad and the Transdniestrian district. On Wednesday, the Party of Socialists in the Moldovan parliament elaborated on a legislative initiative supporting all suggestions voiced by Dodon and registered it in the parliament. Socialists will seek its consideration and adoption.
The DPM will introduce the single-member constituencies, Plahotniuc said on his blog in return.
