Syrian opposition's behavior in Astana not to affect further course of events - Lavrentyev

ASTANA. May 4 (Interfax) - The Syrian opposition's behavior at Thursday's plenary meeting of the Astana talks should be attributed to a lack of self-control and insufficient diplomatic experience, Russian special presidential representative for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev said.

"I would characterize this simply as an element of unrestraint and a lack of experience in political-diplomatic work," Lavrentyev said at a news conference in Astana on Thursday.

"One may certainly assume that some Syrian armed opposition members felt boiling over. But I believe this can be fairly said not only about them but also about the Syrian government delegation, which has been fighting terrorism for six years now," he said.

The Syrian opposition's gesture during the plenary meeting will not affect the further course of events in Syria, Lavrentyev added.

"These are nothing but isolated negative manifestations, which cannot obstruct the positive development of the settlement process in Syria on the whole," Lavrentyev said.

"A political settlement is favored today not just by an overwhelming majority of countries but virtually by all countries - the key powers - which have expressed support over the past few weeks for the work that is being done, including in Astana," Lavrentyev said.
